The Famous Kerala Boat Song 'Kuttanadan Punjayile' Just Got A New Twist And It Sounds Awesome

This Famous Kerala Boat Song, Beloved To Malayalees, Just Got A Modern Fusion Twist

Kuttanadan Punchayile Kochu Penne Kuyilale... the famous boat song sung in chorus by rowers in Kerala, led by cheerleaders aboard, just got a new twist, thanks to musicians Shankar Tucker and Vidya Iyer.

Vidya, who is famous for bridging the path between two different sounds, or for that matter, worlds, has done it yet again.

In this fusion composition, the singer along with Shankar Tucker have written the English lyrics and combined it with the folk song.

Listen to the song above.

And, here's the original song.

Born in Chennai, Vidya moved to the United States as a child, where she continued to learn Indian classical music. Today, her YouTube Channel (@vidyavox) has more nearly 1,50,000 subscribers. It features mashups of chart hits like

'Same Old Love' by Selena Gomez and the evergreen 'Mere Sapno Ki Rani' from the Bollywood movie Aradhana, Sam Smith’s ‘Lay Me Down’ with ‘Ennodu Nee Irundhaal’ from the movie I, and Ellie Goulding’s ‘Love Me Like You Do’ with ‘Hosanna’ from Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa.

The song is almost like Vidya's tribute to Kerala, where she has spent a lot of her time as a kid.

In a Facebook post, Vidya writes, "Half of my family is from Kerala, and I used to go there a lot as a kid. It's still one of my favorite places to go, and it's so beautiful!"

The video has been shot in Kerala and features Sreenidhi and Sreedevi performing Mohiniyattam.
