The 'Neerja' Trailer Shows A Side Of Sonam Kapoor You've Never Seen Before

The trailer for the upcoming hijack drama Neerja was released online on Thursday.

Proud to present to you the incredible story of #Neerja! https://t.co/qWEKs38ppE#NeerjaTrailer@foxstarhindi@BlingLive@AzmiShabana

— Sonam Kapoor (@sonamakapoor) December 17, 2015

Sonam Kapoor, who tweeted out the link to the trailer, stars as Neerja Bhanot, a senior flight purser for the now-defunct American airline Pan Am or Pan American Airways. The movie, directed by Ram Madhavani, depicts the events that took place on-board a Mumbai-New York flight Bhanot took on September 5, 1986, which was hijacked by terrorists during a stop-over at Karachi, Pakistan.

Bhanot, showing exemplary courage, ended up singlehandedly saving the lives of 360 out of 380-odd passengers on board, but was shot dead by the hijackers in the process. She was only 25 hours away from turning 23 years old. The Government of India honoured her actions by awarding her a posthumous Ashok Chakra, India's highest award for gallantry.

Neerja also stars veteran actress Shabana Azmi as Bhanot's mother. The trailer shows us bits of the harrowing on-board drama and gives Kapoor — who is often criticised for doing candyfloss-ish roles — a chance to display some serious acting chops.

Neerja releases in theatres on February 19, 2016.
