Chennai Floods: New Computerised SMS Helpline Launched For People In Distress

Here's some good news for people in flood-hit Chennai exasperated because of connectivity issues.

Now, according to the latest update by Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSDB), a new computerised SMS facility has been launched that can handle up to 1,00,000 text messages (SMS) per day, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The key word in the SMS should, however, be WATER.

The news, announced by the KUWSDB managing director Manivannan P on his Facebook page says that the relief control room set up in Bengaluru is fully equipped to handle any amount of data, and assures the readers that there would be no such thing as clogging.

The helpline SMS number for Bengaluru control room is 9220092200

And here's how people in Chennai can send the text message to the number:

Step 1: Type in the distress SMS number on your phone, i.e., 9220092200

Step 2: Type in your emergency with the key word WATER in the message, for example: WATER 5 family members stranded at house no 5, 3rd street, CIT colony, Kolathur.

Step 3: Add your own name and number at the end of the message. Your message should read like: WATER Five family members stranded at house no 5, 3rd street, CIT colony, Kolathur. Sent by Arun: 8734566667

Step 4: You'll receive an acknowledgement message.

Step 5: Your message will be forwarded to the concerned department
