Business Insider has a yummy scoop on concerns that Zomato boss, Deepinder Goyal, is having with the performance of his sales team. Zomato is valued at a billion dollars and like maturing Indians startups, under pressure to justify those valuations with revenues.

Amidst reports that it was sacking 10% of its workforce ( about 250-300 employees) and that it may not be able to meet its sales targets for the first time this year, Goyal has sent out a mail, that has him warning the concerned team to shape up or ship out.

Though meant for the sales team, Goyal's email, whose subject line reads 'Perspective for our sales team,' was later forwarded to all employees after the mass-firing. An anonymous member of the sales team disclosed to BI that the situation at Zomato was akin to 'Housing.com' (in the aftermath of ex-CEO Rahul Yadav's firing).

In the email, Goyal admits that Zomato is "far behind on the numbers" that it promised to its investors for the year ending March 2016 and that some sales executives faced 'motivation issues.' There's also a Question and Answer appendix where Goyal cites possible employee grievances and attempts to explain, though still replete with veiled warnings.

This is the complete text of the email as it appears in the BI.

Some of the stern bits:

We have grown tremendously over the past few months, and our sales team has more than quadrupled in 2015. The hard reality of this growth is that our revenue hasn't kept up with the growth in our sales team.

We are far behind the numbers that we promised our investors for this financial year (year ending March 2016) - our investors have said that so far, we have always delivered what we have promised. We are close to not living up to that for the first time in the last 5 years. So we really need the sales team to achieve peak performance, and it needs to happen right now.

The picture we are talking about is Zomato. And the pixel we are talking about is you. Each one of us is a pixel, and all these pixels together, make up the picture. When someone fails to perform their role up to expectations, that pixel stops shining brightly, and as a result, the picture starts looking faded.
