A 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit northern Afghanistan on Monday afternoon, and tremors were felt in neighbouring countries in South Asia. The US Geological Survey put the epicentre near Jarm, near Afghanistan-Pakistan border in the country's northeast, 250 kilometres (160 miles) from the capital Kabul and at a depth of 213.5 km.

Powerful tremors jolted Pakistan and caused people to come rushing out onto streets. The death toll in South Asia stood at 100 at the time of filing this report, according to Reuters. Tremors were felt in India and Kyrgyzstan as well but no major damage has been reported.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered aid to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

I have asked for an urgent assessment and we stand ready for assistance where required, including Afghanistan & Pakistan.

— Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) October 26, 2015
