HYDERABAD--In an incident which highlights the negligence of civic officials, a house was demolished in Hyderabad's Alwal area on Saturday with a 60-year-old man inside it.
In their enthusiasm to pull down illegal structures, revenue officials of the Ranga Reddy district administration nearly killed the man as they undertook a demolition drive when he was still inside his house at Devender Nagar in Jawaharnagar.
The victim, T Srinivas Rao, a shop worker, was sleeping during the demolition drive against illegal constructions, when the roof of the room came crashing on him.
The officials did not check whether any inmate was inside the shanties or not.
Jawaharnagar Inspector Venkatagiri said told PTI that the officials did not notice the man. "He suffered injuries and was immediately admitted to a hospital. He is out of danger," he told PTI.
Srinivas survived the incident, but got buried in the debris and started crying for help.
However, due to the noise of the earth-mover, the demolition squad failed to hear the victim's cry for help, said a revenue official who was present during the incident.
At that juncture, the officials realised that a human was inside, removed debris and rescued Srinivas.
Based on a complaint, police registered a case against the revenue officials for allegedly not giving any notice prior to demolition and negligence, he added.
