NEW DELHI -- Just short of three months since rationalist M.M. Kalburgi was shot and killed in Karnataka, Huchangi Prasad, a journalism student at Davanagere University, was attacked for his writings on caste, perceived to be "anti-Hindu."

Prasad, 23, was allegedly attacked by an unidentified men on Thursday in central Karnataka, The Hindu reported.

According to his complaint, an unidentified man came to the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Hostel at his university in the early hours of the morning, claiming that Prasad's mother had been hospitalised following a heart attack, and offered to take him to see her, the newspaper reported.

On the way, a group of eight to ten people surrounded Prasad, and pushed him around, according to the complaint.

“They surrounded me and started to push me around. They said my writings were anti-Hindu as I talked about the caste system. They even put kumkum all over my face. They pulled out a knife and said they will cut my fingers off so I can never write again,” he told The Hindu.

Prasad then ran into the nearby woods, and waited until the group left before returning to his hostel and filing a police complaint.
