Silent Wedding Reel Of Sonia And Rajiv Gandhi Is Charm Immaculate

The Shahid Kapoor-Mira Rajput wedding may have made the most noise on the tabloids but--irrespective of your political inclinations--you can't help admire this silent reel of Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi getting married in 1968.

This July, newsreel archive British Movietone, released this silent black-and-white footage of Rajiv Gandhi getting betrothed to Sonia Gandhi née Maino, with a clearly ecstatic Indira Gandhi looking on. There are various shots of the ceremony taking place amidst throngs of well wishers and some standout moments include the happy couple with (then) President Dr Zakir Hussain, and Mrs. Vijay Lakshmi Pandit.

In just under two minutes, the video shows how good-looking a couple the duo made. Watch as they complete the varmala ceremony, sign the register, and then cut a really spectacular-looking cake. Priceless.
