The Sheena Bora murder case is back on front-page headlines, this time over conflicting reports about accused Indrani Mukerjea's alleged drug overdose in jail. According to reports in the past, Mukerjea was on medication for epilepsy and depression. She collapsed in Mumbai's Byculla Jail on 2 October and was rushed to JJ Hospital.
However, it is not been established conclusively whether or not Mukerjea collapsed due to drug overdose. A report on The Indian Express says, "Deepening the mystery over what led to INX Media co-founder Indrani Mukerjea’s collapse inside the Byculla prison, JJ Hospital Dean T P Lahane claimed on Sunday that this was not a case of drug overdose. Relying on the Forensic Science Laboratory’s (FSL), Lahane said her blood samples did not show excessively high levels of Etizolam or Mirtazapine."
Mukerjea herself apparently told the police that she had neither been fed any medicine in jail, nor has she consumed any by herself. Which leaves everyone with the big question that what knocked her out in the jail.
Contradicting her statement, Mukerjea's lawyer told The Times of India: "Indrani never had any suicidal tendency nor did she have any anxiety or depression problem while she was in police custody. It needs to be investigated how she got hold of the medicines. We hope she will answer all."
The Times of India adds: "Though the tests done to determine drug overdose has come negative at the FSL, the test at Hinduja hospital has confirmed presence of anti-depressants in her blood."
Mukerjea's official statement will be recorded today.
