The houses of several Tamil stars, including cult actor Vijay, were raided by the Income Tax (IT) department sleuths early on Wednesday morning, sending shockwaves across the film industry that has several mega-budget films lined up.

Ahead of the release of the actor's big ticket film Puli, the IT officers also raided the houses of its producers as well as its few actresses such as Nayanthara and Samantha, in Hyderabad in more than 35 locations across Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

"The raids started at 7 AM. Several teams jointly conducting (them) at various locations," Income Tax officials told PTI.

According to The Hindu, the raid was "definitely" connected to their film Puli. In fact, a senior IT officer told the newspaper that the source of a lot of investments in Vijay's upcoming fantasy drama were not explained.

Media reports also added that the houses of the producers of the film such as Madurai Anbu, Selvakumar, Shibu and financier Ramesh among others, were also raided.

Puli, which is supposed to be actress Sridevi's comeback film to Tamil cinema, is set to hit the theatres on on October 1.
