The trailer for the upcoming Main Aur Charles, starring Randeep Hooda, Richa Chadha, and Adil Hussain, was uploaded online on Wednesday.
The film is a fictitious look at the life of one of India's most notorious serial killers, Charles Sobhraj, who was given nicknames such as 'The Serpent', 'The Proofreader', and 'The Bikini Killer'. In the '70s, he was known to have committed at least 12 murders, all of whom were Western tourists travelling through southeast Asia.
The Frenchman of Indo-Vietnamese origin was also known for his extravagant and hedonistic lifestyle, which he boasted about freely in various interviews. Initially jailed in India for 21 years, he was released and lived a carefree, comfortable life in Paris until he was re-arrested in Kathmandu, Nepal, a few years later. He is currently still there, serving a life imprisonment term.
Main Aur Charles, directed by Prawaal Raman (Darna Mana Hai, Darna Zaroori Hai), features Hooda as Sobhraj. The actor looks appropriately suave and speaks convincingly in French-accented English, although his fluency in Hindi seems remarkable. Chadha plays Mira Sharma, who is shown to be one of Sobhraj's many associates.
The colour-grading and costumes transport one back to the '70s and '80s, and the film looks intriguing enough to warrant interest. However, it must be said that while the trailer works as a whole, a single cheesy line that goes "Aur jab woh mujhe dekhta hai, I feel like having sex with him", delivered without a trace of irony, comes quite close to ruining it.
Main Aur Charles hits theatres on October 30.
