IIT Madras Student Commits Suicide


A 23-year-old student of IIT Madras allegedly committed suicide on Monday. Nagendra Kumar Reddy was found hanging in his hostel room last evening after he did not leave his room for lunch or dinner that day. It is as yet unclear why the M.Tech student took the extreme step, said police. No suicide note has been found yet.

Reddy had reportedly returned from his home in Andhra Pradesh's Kadapa district on Monday morning. and did not leave the room after that. His friends finally discovered his body after they tried to look inside from his room window, according to reports.

According to an NDTV report, Reddy was upset after he did not clear the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering to help him study abroad. His education at IIT was being sponsored by a private construction firm at Manapakkam, and he had an assured job following his completion of the masters degree course.

Authorities at the premier engineering institute expressed their condolences in a statement, adding that they were cooperating with the police in its investigation. "We have no indication of the reason for (the) death," said Director of the institute, M Bhaskar Ramamurthy.

"The student's parents have been notified. The Institute offers its deepest condolences to the parents for the unfortunate and devastating loss," he said.
