The Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has decided to prohibit the slaughter of animals and ban the sale of meat during the Jain fasting period of Paryushan between September 10 and 28, according to reports. This resolution has been in place since 2007, but it is only this year that the ban has been extended to four days -- September 10, 13, 17 and 18 -- instead of the mandatory two days last year.

Times of India reported that around 1.25 lakh Jains are likely to fast between September 11 and 27 and BMC has decided to close down abattoirs during that period after a poll in the general body meeting on Friday that BJP won by 29 votes.

The report quoted BJP MLA and corporator Narendra Mehta as saying that "looking at the growing population of Jains in the region it was only natural to ban meat sale during the entire fasting period". "The municipality is within its powers to extend the ban," said Mehta.

However, the announcement was met with disbelief, anger and wry humour on social media. Most people saw the move as an attempt by the government to curb people's freedom of choice.
