What's Quick And Brainy And Steals? An IITian On A Harley

On paper, T Kiran, 30, is the model of rectitude. A graduate of the Indian Institute Of Technology, Madras and an employee with navratna, ONGC. Earlier this week Kiran under the alias of Tahir Ali, ambled into a Harley Davidson showroom in the Hyderabad's posh Banjara Hills for a test ride and--unbecoming of his army upbringing--drove off on the Harley Davidson Street 750, the cheapest in the stable at an ex-showroom price of Rs. 4.32 lakh.

While he managed to disappear for two days. the police finally apprehended him Thursday night in Mumbai, though it isn't known whether they recovered the bike.

The police tracked him down with the help of CCTV footage and call records.

Kiran allegedly walked into a showroom in Hyderabad's upscale Banjara Hills and filled a form before taking a bike for a "test drive". Every detail on that form was fake, say the police, including his name.

CCTV images--that went viral on social media yesterday-- show the alleged thief starting the bike while a showroom employee watches, picking up speed and vanishing into traffic. Before the theft, he allegedly went to an ATM to withdraw money. According to NDTV, he also bought a helmet on the way to the showroom, which is owned by a leader of Andhra Pradesh's ruling Telugu Desam Party.
