A cattle smuggler and his aide with Rs 7,45,200 were nabbed and 196 cattle heads worth Rs 16,82,700 seized by the BSF from the riverine border of Dhubri sector in Assam along Bangladesh, the BSF said today.

On specific information BSF 17 Battalion troops deployed in Dhubri sector apprehended one person identified as Joynal Abedin of Dhubri district during a surprise check in an engine-fitted country boat at Bansichar checkpost and recovered Rs 7,45,200 from him yesterday, a BSF release said today.

During the search of the boat, Sub Inspector Ashutosh Kumar saw one person holding a bag sitting at a corner of the boat.

Stating that Joynal was nervous on being questioned about his identity and the contents in the bag, the release said the BSF Post Commander found bundles of Indian currency notes in denomination of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 adding up to Rs 7,45,200 wrapped in a cloth under mangoes.

During interrogation Joynal disclosed that he had received the amount from one Abdul Jabbar of Dhubri as payment for cattle, which he had smuggled out to Bangladesh.

Based on information provided by Joynal, the BSF conducted a joint search operation with the police at Newghat and apprehended Abdul Jabbar from his residence late last night, the release said.

As per information available with the BSF, Abdul Jabbar was a school teacher and has been indulging in smuggling of cattle by financing local smugglers.

The BSF also launched a special operation last night in the border areas and seized 196 cattle worth Rs 16,82,700 from the riverine border of Dhubri sector.
