SRINAGAR -- Indian Army today intercepted a group of militants near the Line of Control (LoC) in Tangdhar area of north Kashmir, triggering a gun battle.

The troops confronted a group of militants moving close to the LoC, an army officer said. The militants were asked to surrender but they opened fire, he said, adding the troops retaliated and an encounter started.

Firing between militants and security forces in Kupwara area in north Kashmir was underway on Saturday evening, and the area was cordoned off where suspected terrorists are reported to be hiding. Search operations are underway.

ANI reported that two soldiers were reported to be injured during the gun battle in Kupwa street of Karnah.

The gun battle was going on when the last reports came in, the army official said. There was no immediate report of any casualty on either side, he said.

The officer said it was not immediately known whether the militants were trying to sneak into this side from across the border.
