Sonakshi Sinha is often accused of playing roles that require her to be eye-candy or the mandatory simpering female presence in a testosterone-driven commercial action movie.
Many critics and commentators have pointed out that Sinha, despite impressing in films such as Lootera (2013), often chooses to play safe by playing marginal roles in 'Rs 100 crore films' with established stars rather than choosing films that give her more substantial parts (this popular sketch by online content network The Viral Fever, for example, parodies her apparent fear of 'acting').
Here's a piece of news that is, therefore, heartening. According to a Bombay Times report, the actress will be playing the lead role in Apoorva Lakhia's next film, Haseena — The Queen Of Mumbai.
The film is a biopic based on the life of the notorious crime boss Haseena Parkar, kingpin Dawood Ibrahim's sister.
Parkar, who reportedly controlled a large portion of the dreaded gangster's massive business operations in Mumbai, operated out of the city's Nagpada area and passed away due to cardiac arrest in July 2014. Having entered the world of crime in 1991, shortly after her husband Ismail Parkar was shot dead by the rival Arun Gawli gang, she rose quickly over the years to become the 'Godmother of Nagpada'.
According to an India Today report, Parkar — who was notorious for her involvement in land grabbing, getting premises vacated, helping cable operators in Mumbai set their boundaries and taking a cut from whatever business she pleased — owned undeclared assets estimated to be valued at approximately Rs 5,000 crore at the time of her death.
This is what Sinha had to say about playing this extremely interesting role.
"It's a great script, a powerful role, a very intriguing story and an opportunity to play a character who is the polar opposite of me. I have always wanted to be a part of a biopic and this is the perfect one. It's going to be extremely challenging for me and I am looking forward to it."
Reportedly, the film, which shall begin shooting early next year, will focus on four decades of Parkar's life, exploring her tumultuous underworld reign as well as her familial connection with India's most wanted man.
