NALGONDA (Telangana) -- A newborn baby girl was sold for Rs 26,000 by a relative here in Telangana, police said today.

The incident took place two-and-a-half months ago in Suryapet town of this district, but came to light yesterday when the newborn's mother lodged a complaint.

The mother, Kavitha, was shifted to a hospital for treatment of a mental ailment after delivering the baby girl, who was in custody of her aunt, police said.

While Kavitha was in hospital her aunt sold the child for Rs 26,000 to one Nirmala, who also lives in Suryapet, with the help of a woman Durgachary, who acted as mediator, they said.

Police said five persons were involved in this entire episode. Investigation is on, but no arrest has been made, they added.
