A class 9 student was killed in Imphal today as protesting students clashed with the police.

Sapam Robinhood, a student from Anand Singh Academy Higher Secondary School was reportedly hit by a rubber bullet in the face during the clashes.

Following the death of the student, an indefinite curfew has been imposed on Imphal East and West districts.

The protesting students are a part of the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System organisation which has been agitating for a tough law regarding an Inner Line Permit regime, a rule to restrict the entry of outsiders into the state.

The students have been protesting for a week now, demanding the introduction of a bill which will safeguard indigenous people.

The students want the state to implement the law to check the demographic imbalances. ILPS is a travel document that restricts 'outsiders' to enter and stay in a state without permission.

This means, if the bill is passed, "non-locals" - both Indians and foreigners - can visit these places only with a state permit.

The Inner line permit regimes are in place in Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram.

The youths in Manipur want this law to be passed to protect jobs and other resources in the state.
