New York Times Mistakenly Publishes Politician Digvijaya Singh's Leaked Photo With Partner In #SelfieWithDaughter Story

It's a blooper that has Indians on social networking sites howling with laughter, despite a sombre and prompt correction.

In an article published on June 29, the New York Times highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's nationwide #SelfieWithDaughter scheme to promote gender equality.

The piece written by Andrew Tavani included tweets by Indians who posted lovely selfies they've clicked with their daughters -- some newborn. Among those was a tweet that had a leaked photo of veteran politician Digvijaya Singh with his partner Amrita Rai with an obviously sarcastic comment.

The NYT apparently took the tweet at face value and included it in the selfie story. Singh, 68, lost his wife Asha in 2013 and confirmed on Twitter last year that he was in a relation with television journalist Rai, years younger than him.

The NYT put out this correction soon after several Twitter users brought the error to their notice.

Correction: an earlier tweet included in this article featured a satirical comment about an Indian politician seen in a photograph with his companion, not his daughter. We regret the error.

Singh is the General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee and a Rajya Sabha member.
