NEW DELHI -- After finding lead beyond permissible limits, the Delhi government has banned the sale of Maggi noodles for 15 days in the capital.

The ban was announced on Wednesday by the Aam Aadmi Party government after a meeting with Nestle India officials, earlier in the day.

Health Minister Satyendra Jain said the government has asked Nestle India to withdraw Maggi noodles from Delhi, and a fresh decision will be taken in 15 days after rechecking new stock.

On Tuesday, Delhi government officials said that 10 samples of Maggi noodles, which were picked up for testing from the National Capital Region, had lead content higher than the permissible limit.

Kishore Biyani-led Future Group removed Maggi from its Big Bazaar retail outlets on Wednesday. “In the interest of consumer sentiment and concerns we have taken Maggi noodles off the shelves from all our stores for the time being. We will wait for more clarity from authorities to take any further course of action," said a Future group spokesperson.

Several states including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Maharashtra and West Bengal are conducting tests on Maggi noodles for excess lead and monosodium glutamate (MSG), which enhances taste.

On Wednesday, Maharashtra, Goa and Kerala said that there have been no negative reports on the noodles, so far.

"We have taken some samples but we have not found any negative reports," Girish Bapat, Food and Civil Supplies Minister in Maharashtra told PTI.

"Their production is batch wise and to do a detailed analysis of their product, we need to test samples from different batches, the work of which is going on. A problem can be identified once more such samples from other batches are tested," he said.

Meanwhile, Nestle India shares plummeted to nine percent on Wednesday, wiping out Rs. 5,942 crore from its market valuation, PTI reported. The company finally settled at Rs 6,191.10, down 9.05 percent from its previous close on the BSE, and it dropped nine percent to end at Rs 6,186.95 at the NSE.
