The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has banned the Ambedkar-Periyar Study Circle (APSC), a student association, following an anonymous complaint that it tried to "spread hatred" against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to a report in The Times of India, the group of students was mobilising the SC/ST students to question government policies on the use of Hindi language and the ban on cow slaughter.

The members of the APSC have now written a letter to the institute's Director against what they called a "unilateral and undemocratic" decision to derecognise the group, according to The Hindu.

A member of the APSC told The Hindu, "We were not asked (for) any explanation before this mail came. It was only later that we met the Dean, who asked us for an assurance that we will not involve in such activities again."

On Thursday, the APSC members wrote to the IIT-Madras Director: "Our organisation is engaged in propagating Ambedkar and Periyar thoughts, in helping depressed castes and the caste Hindus to realise the evil of caste-based discrimination taking place in modern India and expose the ideology functioning behind such discrimination,” reported The Hindu.

According to ToI, the APSC was created as a discussion forum in April 2014 by a group of politically-inclined students from IIT-Madras to promote the ideology and writings of BR Ambedkar and Periyar.
