NEW DELHI — After unleashing a verbal attack against the NDA government on Wednesday, former prime minister Manmohan Singh met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who described the meeting as “great” on his Twitter account.

Speaking at the National Students' Union of India convention, earlier in the day, Singh said that he had not used his public office for personal gains.

"I can say in all humility that I have not used my public office to enrich myself, my family, or my friends," Singh said. "BJP keeps harping on corruption to divert people's attention to non-issues.”

Singh, who has been named as an accused in the coal block allocation scam, came under fire after former TRAI chairman Pradip Baijal alleged in his book that the former prime minister had warned him of harm if he refused to cooperate in the 2G spectrum case.

Singh's meeting with Modi came after BJP President Amit Shah said that it was the former prime minister's responsibility to prevent corrupt activity in his government.

"As far as the matter between Manmohan Singh ji and Baijal is concerned, I don't want to get into it. But I believe that a Prime Minister should not just be non-corrupt himself, he should also not let others indulge in corruption," said Shah.

"Under the leadership of Dr. Manmohan Singh, the country saw scams worth Rs 12 lakh crore. How can the Congress run away from this responsibility?" he said.

Earlier in the day, PTI reported that Modi had suggested Congress Party president Sonia Gandhi ran the PMO during the UPA government. In an interview with the news agency, Modi referred to her as "extra-constitutional authorities who were the ones really wielding power".

On Wednesday, Singh also said the institutions of democracy were “under threat."

"The entire edifice of the welfare state is now being dismantled in the guise of promoting faster economic growth, whereas they are two sides of the same coin,” he said.
