Man Who Recorded Cop Hurling Brick At Woman Wants To Expose Corruption

NEW DELHI -- Kamal Kant, who shot the three-minute video of a traffic policeman attacking a woman, said that he wanted to "expose the corrupt officer," who had earlier tortured his fellow driver and also extorted a bribe from him.

A resident of the Zamrudpur locality, Kamal works as driver for a Supreme Court lawyer. He was going to Golf Links to collect a file when he saw the incident and recorded it on his phone.

"I was at traffic signal when the woman with two kids on the scooty crossed the signal. When she crossed the signal, it was green, but the policeman caught her claiming that she had jumped the red light. Waiting at the traffic signal, I noticed the entire incident," Kant said.

When the signal turned red, Kant stopped his car near the woman's scooty and started recording the scuffle between the cop and woman.

"The woman asked the cop to issue challan but he demanded a bribe of Rs 200. When the woman refused to pay she was pulled by the cop. Seeing this, I started recording the incident. To resist, the woman picked up a stone but in return cop threw a heavy piece of brick on her and then he tried to flee," he said.

Kant claimed that the cop tried to escape from the spot, but the woman stopped him, and passerbys came to help.

Kant alleged that the traffic policeman had harassed another driver, "A fellow driver was stopped by him 45 days back and he slapped him and took Rs. 2,200 along with his driving license. Since then I used to notice him every time I used to cross this signal," he said.

"Every day I see traffic police taking bribe. They keep 70 percent money with them and only 30 percent goes to the government. So I wanted to expose the corruption in the system," said the driver, who cited Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as a source for inspiration.
