CHENNAI — Celebrations broke outside AIADMK general secretary and former chief minister J. Jayalalithaa's residence when the news of her acquittal in the disproportionate assets case by the Karnataka High Court on Monday reached here.

Party cadres jumped in joy and burst crackers. They chanted "Long Live Amma" and distributed sweets.

Some smashed coconuts on the ground, as an auspicious sign.

AIADMK cadres had assembled outside Jayalalithaa's residence since morning here and were waiting with bated breath for the court's decision.

The court struck down the verdict given by a trial court in the Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case in an appeal filed by Jayalalithaa.
