Earlier today, former actress Twinkle Khanna and author Chetan Bhagat locked horns on Twitter in a battle of wits, much to the delight of Twitter buffs and regular fans.

The actress who writes a regular column for The Times of India, under the pseudonym MrsFunnyBones, has already earned a reputation for her sharp sense of humour. Her bio on the blog jokingly mentions that she is secretly trying to change her name to Chetali Bhagat so that her columns get made into movies β€” a not-so-subtle reference to the bestselling author whose books have been converted into movies several times over.

Picking up on this reference, a fan complimented Khanna on Twitter, saying that she was a fantastic writer and didn't need to change her name. Khanna was quick to tweet a cheeky response with a jab at Bhagat, who recently had his television debut as a judge for Nach Baliye 7.

I do!He gets to judge NachBaliye and i get to judge if that gross thing on my floor is dog puke or poop #SuchIsLifehttps://t.co/glVOtvREii

In no time, Chetan picked up on the tweet, and thus ensued a volley of light-hearted pow-wow between the duo. He tweeted:

well, i'd say u have the bigger challenge girl..btw, how do u tell the difference between the two anyway? https://t.co/F2GhJvI3dA

Here's what followed:

it's a short life-if lucky enough 2 get opportunities to do diverse things then one should @chetan_bhagat write a bestseller abt it too :)

After their Twitter back-and-forth started attracting quite a bit of attention, Chetan immediately tweeted out saying that this was just "fun banter", and it was silly if anyone was reading more into it.

Ok seriously guys, was just a fun banter with @mrsfunnybones She is fun and has a sense of humour in her tweets. Silly to read more into it.
