Gionee Launches Elife S7, Lays Out India Plans

Gionee India launched the Elife S7 smartphone in India last week, the ‘ultra-slim’ smartphone is priced at 24,999, and is available in three colours.

The company said that it has sold over 4 million devices in India, and plans to set up a manufacturing base in India with an investment of Rs 300 crore in the next three years.

Unlike other Chinese smartphone vendors, Gionee has pursued an offline sales strategy, which they believe has worked for them.

“We’re amongst the top 7-8 players in the country. We have a four percent marketshare according to GFK data.” said Arvind R. Vohra, Country CEO of Gionee India, speaking to HuffPost India.

“We were the second Chinese company to come to India after Lenovo. In terms of eyeballs, attention and sales, we would be number one. The fact that Xiaomi had to go offline, the relevance is there.” Vohra said, when asked about the threat from smartphone brands that have taken to online flash sales. “The fact that Apple, the world’s most valuable tech company has never gone the price route also goes to show that companies need to get their value proposition right.” he added.

The Gionee ELIFE S7, which supports two SIMs and 4G LTE networks, is just 5.5mm thin, and is crafted in aviation level aluminum magnesium alloy. Both sides of the Elife S7 are sheathed in Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The handset runs Android 5.0 with Gionee's Amigo 3.0 UI.

The S7 has a 2700 mAh battery, and features an ‘extreme’ mode, which automatically enables 10% of remaining battery power to potentially last for 33 hours 45 minutes standby time by freezing functions except calling and text messages.

We’ve done a lot of work on the camera, battery backup and software optimisation on the Gionee Elife S7, said said William Lu, President of Gionee.

The phone’s 13MP camera uses Gionee's self-developed 'Image+' image processing system which enables users to shoot high quality images, while the S7's 8MP front camera incorporates intelligent Face beauty 3.0 technology. The handset will retail in three colours - Black, White, and Blue.
