Microsoft Corp. announced a new Surface device yesterday that is thinner, lighter and $300 cheaper than its higher specced predecessor, the Surface Pro 3.

“We’ve taken everything we learned making Surface Pro 3 and poured that innovation into this newest Surface." said Panos Panay, corporate vice president, Microsoft Surface in an official statement yesterday.

Weighing 622 grams, the Surface 3 is powered by an Intel Atom x7 processor, and embeds a 10.8-inch (1920x1280 pixel resolution) ClearType HD multi-touch display.

The entry-level version, priced at $499, comes with 2 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, and includes an 8 megapixel rear camera and a 3.5 megapixel secondary camera.

Other notable features include stereo speakers with Dolby Audio-enhanced sound, and a one-year subscription to Microsoft Office 365.

The Surface 3 tablet will run Windows 8.1 when it ships, and will be upgraded to Windows 10 for free. Microsoftstore.com has opened up for preorders for the device in 26 countries starting yesterday.
