NEW DELHI — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met Twitter CEO Dick Costolo and shared his views on how the microblogging site can help initiatives such as 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan' and 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' and promote India's tourism potential.

"The prime minister spoke about avenues through which Twitter can help in initiatives such as 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan' and 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' not just by providing a platform but also by initiating a prolonged effort to support these initiatives," said a statement from the Prime Minister's Office.

"He also urged Twitter to help promote India's rich tourist potential across the world."

The release said Modi talked about the International Day of Yoga and how Twitter can contribute in making it more vibrant across the world.

The prime minister said Twitter should tap into India's linguistic diversity and offer services that would draw people from various linguistic backgrounds to the site.

Costolo told the prime minister that Twitter was growing fast in India.

He said he had come to see "how people are innovating" and saw India's young population "as a wonderful opportunity for Twitter to grow".

Costolo shared some of the innovations by Twitter to enhance connectivity between users of the site.
