Nashik — An 18-year-old youth was allegedly stripped naked and paraded on a donkey today apparently as a punishment for having an affair with a girl who was not of his caste, police sources said. His family members were also allegedly beaten up by locals, they said.

The shocking incident took place this morning at village Wambori in adjoining Ahmednagar district and 7 to 8 persons have been detained in connection with the episode, sources in Special IG Control Room at Nashik said.

The youth, Shivam Dwarkanath Bharadia, was in a relationship with a girl belonging to another caste and people of Wambori were opposing their affair.

According to the sources, a group of villagers gathered and first thrashed his family members. They then got hold of the teenager, stripped him and put him on a donkey and took out a procession. The villagers also put a garland made of slippers around his neck.

When contacted, Sanjay Patil, In-charge of Rahuri Police Station, under whose jurisdiction the village falls, said they have registered an offence and were gathering more details about the incident, which led to tension in the area.

Top police officials from Ahmednagar later visited the village.
