Gangrape film shown at Delhi slum where two convicts lived

Several people left after watching the sections that featured Vinay and Mukesh.

Defying the ban on a documentary featuring the December 2012 gangrape convicts, a group of people  screened the film Thursday at Ravidas camp in Delhi’s R K Puram, where three of the five convicts lived.

The Delhi Police said they were looking into the matter. “The investigation to ascertain the identity of the people who screened the documentary at Ravidas camp is on and necessary action will be taken,” a senior police officer said.

On Sunday, filmmaker Ketan Dikshit had screened the documentary at Rup Dhanu village in Agra after which a case was registered against him and his associates. Their laptop, projector and pen drive were seized, but the activists were let off Monday evening.

At Ravidas camp on Thursday, family members of Vinay and Mukesh Singh locked themselves in their one-room homes, but over 50 residents gathered at a chauraha to watch the film. A projector was connected to a laptop and a white sheet of cloth was put up as a screen, residents said.

They said that they were initially reluctant when the group told them that they were going to screen the documentary. They were told the idea was to educate children on how to be “good human beings”.

Festive offer

“We have seen Mukesh and Vinay grow up. We also know their parents well. We thought that the screening of the film might disturb the camp. Later, we were convinced that it is for our own good and that even our children should watch the film,” a resident said.

Many people who turned up left midway complaining that it was in English. “I went to watch it but I was unable to follow since it was in English. The volunteers were translating some of what was being said,” a woman said.
