Tamhane’s film has wowed audiences across the globe ever since its world premiere at the 71st Venice International Film Festival in September 2014. There, it picked up two prestigious awards — Luigi De Laurentiis (Lion Of The Future) for Tamhane, the highest award for first-time directors; and Best Film in the Horizons category, also for debut films.

Since then, the film has been an unstoppable juggernaut in the international film festival circuit, having picked up 17 awards till date. These include two prestigious FIPRESCI (International Federation of Film Critics) awards, one at Vienna and another at Belgrade, Serbia. It also won three awards, including Best Film, at the 16th Mumbai International Film Festival in October 2014, as part of the international competition.

The film, which has received glowing reviews in publications all across the world, is a courtroom drama that has been praised for its realism and attention to detail. Focusing on the trial of an ageing folk singer who has been arrested for abetting a sewerage worker’s suicide through his supposedly inflammatory songs, Court puts the Indian judicial system under a microscope. By observing not only the proceedings of the case, but also the lives of all the players involved, it paints a picture of a rapidly-changing India at odds with its diversity and history.

The film has been independently produced by Vivek Gomber, who is not only an old collaborator of Tamhane’s, but also an actor — he plays the role of defence lawyer Vinay Vora in the film. “Court is my first film as a producer, and to manage an Indian release for it, is like a dream come true. I am very happy for the cast and crew of the film, whose hard work will finally be recognised by the people here,” he said.

28-year-old director Tamhane, who along with Gomber has taken the film to several parts of the world, feels that this “homecoming” is going to be special. “I have a feeling that the film will be most relatable and enjoyable to viewers here, as the film depicts the everyday lives of ordinary people in a simple, and sometimes humourous way.”
