Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal's Reddit AMA Was Hilarious. And Then This Happened
Deepinder Goyal

Deepinder Goyal, founder and CEO of Zomato, participated in a Reddit AMA last night. An evening of hilarious questions, answers and incessant trolling, Goyal gave some clever as well as some interesting answers.

For example, when asked who his favuorite superhero was, Goyal replied:

Goyal's answer that "persistence" was the thing that helped him turn Zomato into a successful business venture, earned him some slight *cough* snide comments.

But there were some funny moments too, like about awkward Facebook friend requests:

And about the identity of the person who handles Zomato's Twitter account:

Apart from all the banter and trolling, however, he did make one important announcement. Goyal announced that Zomato would start with their home delivery services from next week.

A user asked him, "I've heard you guys are starting food ordering, what about the cities that'd it be available in? I'm sure there would be few of them right now?"

To which Goyal replied, "Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore for a start. Others will follow very soon."

But by the end of the AMA, the question that got upvoted the most must have been rather unpleasant for the young CEO. A user, apparently an employee in the ranks, commented, "The culture in tech team is toxic. Contributing to open source isn't even considered. In office hackathons, people are expected to work on Zomato-related things only. How do you expect great developers to want to work in such environment?"

His answer: "Why would we contribute to open source if we are barely able to ship what we need to ship to keep our users happy."

That didn't go down well with Reddit users.

"All these are unrealistic expectations from a growing company. If you are part of the tech team at Zomato, you are clearly at the wrong place. You should either try to get answers to these questions by talking to me and believe in what we are doing, or leave. We don’t force people to work here if they don’t want to."

Well, building a great company can't all be fun and games, right?

An AMA (ask me anything) is a Q&A where celebrities and influential people answer questions from Reddit users about any topic. AMAs are open to all, and use the site's comment system for both questions and answers. It is similar to a press conference, but online.
