Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi launched the launch date and price of its Redmi 2 smartphone, along with the Mi Pad tablet in Delhi today.

The successor to the Redmi 1S, the Redmi 2 is powered by a 64-bit Snapdragon 410 processor, has 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of flash storage, and supports 32 GB cards through an expansion slot.

The phone supports 4G LTE networks on dual SIM, dual standby mode, and has an 8-megapixel f/2.2 rear camera and a 2 megapixel secondary camera. The cameras support manual and HDR modes, along with new software features like Beautify, which applies smart filters to smoothen the skin.

The Redmi 2 supports USB On-The Go, and is 15 grams lighter than its predecessor. The smartphone has a 2200mAh battery, which is 10% more than its predecessor, and supports Quick Charge 1.0, which charges the battery to 30 percent in 30 minutes.

The new Snapdragon 410 processor, which features the Cortex A53 CPU and Adreno 306 GPU offers 30 percent faster browsing speeds and 50 percent higher CPU performance compared to the Redmi 1S, the company claims.

“One of the most important features of the Redmi 2 is that it supports 4G and 3G on both SIM slots. It’s a dual standby device. This is a unique characteristic of the Redmi 2.” said Hugo Barra, vice president of the company's global division, at the launch event.

Barra discussed a dozen new features in their latest OS update - MIUI 6, which includes priority notifications, cloud camera roll, record in-call audio, permission manager and per app data restrictions.

The Redmi 2 sports a fully laminated HD display from Sharp which make the pixels sit much closer to the surface and provide a 178 degree viewing angle. The display is protected by AGC Dragontail glass, which is scratch and shatter proof.

The Redmi 2 is priced at 6,999, and will go on flash sale on March 24’th on Flipkart. Registrations start today at 6 PM.

Xiaomi also announced the launch of its tablet, the MiPad, which features an NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor, 7.9" IPS display, 2GB RAM, 16GB Flash (Expandable to 128GB via microSD card), and 8MP rear camera.

The MiPad is priced at Rs. 12,999, and will also go on sale on March 24th, without registration.
