Man Lynched In Nagaland Was Not A Rapist: Govt

A week after Syed Sarif Khan was lynched by a mob in Nagaland, the state government has reported that he was not a rapist.

Khan, a trader of second hand cars, was accused of raping a Naga girl on Feb. 23. Last Thursday, a frenzied mob stormed into a prison, dragged Khan out, and thrashed him to death. His naked and bloodied body was strung up in the local square in the town of Dimapur.

On Wednesday, the Nagaland government told the centre that Khan and the girl had engaged in consensual sex. The state report said the girl voluntarily went with Khan, who paid her 5000 rupees, PTI reported. The woman filed the FIR against Khan after he refused to pay her more money, according to the report.

The report is based on Khan's confession after he was arrested by the police on Feb. 24

“It appears on the basis of Khan’s confession, that it was not rape but consensual sex,” a Home Ministry official quoted the Nagaland government report as stating.

The police have arrested 47 people in connection with the lynching. Khan was buried at village in Karimganj district of Assam on Sunday.
