NEW DELHI - The elections truly bring out the worst in Indian politicians. The diatribe in the days leading up to the Delhi assembly elections included vituperative attacks on candidates, sweeping claims by leaders of parties contesting and promises by politicians convinced by their own invincibility.

The result? Campaign comments that ended up trying too hard.

Prime minister Narendra Modi stirred things up during a recent rally in Delhi by calling the Aam Aadmi Party backstabbers. He had no great praise for its leader either. Modi asked voters if they wanted to vote for development or for (people who hold) dharnas (protests), in an oblique reference to AAP.

Not deterred by Modi's jibe, Kejriwal said: "Arvind Kejriwal and AAP are a package. And people love that package."

A BJP ad recently targetted Kejriwal by calling his community 'nuisance-makers' in an ad that infuriated the AAP so much, they demanded BJP apologise or face action by Election Commission.

Here are some of the strangest things politicians said during Delhi elections 2015.

Naredra Modi

Sonia Gandhi

Kiran Bedi

Arvind Kejriwal

MJ Akbar

Shazia Ilmi
