A right wing mayor of a city in Gujarat has stirred up fresh controversy after she said women should not wear short shirts and tops as it encourages rape, the IBNLive reported.

Her move to put the onus on women to "conserve Indian values" by dressing conservatively has invited sharp criticism from several quarters, the report said.

"In the context of sexual assaults and other crimes on our young girls, I will say that our girls, keeping Indian culture in mind, should not wear short tops with jeans, so that crime against women in India can be brought under control," Rajkot city mayor Raksha Boriya, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, said.

The report suggested that Boriya squarely put the onus of safety and security of women on those who wore “short or tight-fitting clothes”. She was addressing an event organised by the Non-Resident Gujaratis.

She said girls should not wear tight and short dresses to avoid rape and conserve "Indian culture and values".

"It is an unfortunate statement and the mayor should not issue such statements as she is herself a woman," India Today quoted Rajkot Municipal Corporation Opposition Congress leader Gayatriba Vaghela as saying.
