The man behind the stardom of several South Indian actors, K Balachandran, died yesterday due to a cardiac arrest, leaving behind several tearful faces and a potent legacy in the history of Indian cinema.

The octogenarian who had invested almost half a century in the film industry, holds almost a 100 feature films (as a director/ screenwriter) to his name. Not only did he have a reputation for creating individualistic plots that addressed dynamic subject matters, his work also focused heavily on women-centric themes.

Here are seven of his most loved films available on Youtube.

  • Ethir Neechal
    Shot in 1968, 'Ethir Neechal' was remade into Lakhon Mein Ek with Mahmood. The movie starred Nagesh, Jayanthi, Sreekanth, Sowcar Janaki, and R. Muthuraman. The plot unfolds as an orphan is coerced into marrying an psychologically challenged woman, by the tenants he works for, only to discover that she is quite normal.
  • Moondru Mudichu
    Starring Kamal Hassan, Sridevi and Rajinikant, 'Moondru Mudichu' was released in 1976. Based on 'O Seeta Katha,' a 1974 Tamil film, the movie narrates a woman's revenge on her husband for killing her lover. The music for the film was scored by M. S. Viswanathan
  • Nizhal Nijamakirathu
    'Nizhal Nijamagiradhu,' a 1978 Tamil film, starring Kamal Hassan was Sarath Babu's first Tamil film, after being discovered by K Balachander. The film was a remake of Chilakamma Cheppindi, a 1977 Telegu film that featured Rajinikanth as the lead.
  • Ethiroli
    This comedy-drama was released in 1970, and was well-received by Tamil film buffs everywhere. It was K Balachander's only collaboration with Sivaji Ganesan, and was based on a court room drama.
  • Poikkal Kuthirai
    This comedy film that was inspired from the play 'Marriage Made in Saloon', debuted Ramakrishna and lyricist Vaali. The plot revolves around a bet made in a saloon on wooing a young girl that would result in the loss of the girl's father moustache or the lover's hair.
  • Puthu Puthu Arthangal
    A 1989 drama flick, 'Puthu Puthu Arthangal' narrates the story of a singer who is tricked into marrying a jealous woman. Rahman who plays the role of the singer, eventually runs away from home to met a dancer, played by Sithara, who is also escaping from her married life as a prostitute. The movie was remade in Hindi, featuring Rahul Roy, Anu Agarwal and Ashwini Bhave with music from Bappi Lahiri, but was not released.
  • Kalyana Agathigal
    One of the many movies that K Balachander made on women-centric issues, 'Kalyana Agathigal' was released in 1985. The movie is centred around six friends who have found each other after facing harsh matrimonial worries, and their quest for love in spite of the troublesome interferences of societal pressures.
