The horrifying 2012 Delhi gang rape shook the conscience of India like few other incidents before it. Here is a timeline of the events in pictures.

A 23-year-old physiotherapy student is gang raped by five men and a minor for almost an hour in a moving bus in Delhi. She is sexually assaulted with an iron rod. Her male friend, a software engineer, is also beaten. They are thrown on the road, nearly naked and left for dead. News of the gruesome gang rape spreads across India as the student fights for her life in Safdarjung hospital in Delhi.

The police identifies four suspects as protests erupt in the national capital to ensure justice for the student. The demonstrations demanding safety for women in India gather steam in the following days. Thousands march to the India Gate and the president’s palace by breaking through police barricades. Government authorities use tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowds but the protests continue.

Verma, a former chief justice of the Supreme Court, is constituted to recommend amendments to the criminal law to provide speedy justice for victims of sexual assault and rape.

India is grief stricken after the student dies of her injuries in Singapore. “We are very sad to report that the patient passed away peacefully at 4:45 am on 29 Dec 2012,” Mount Elizabeth Hospital’s Dr. Kevin Loh said in a statement. “Her family and officials from the High Commission of India were by her side. The Mount Elizabeth Hospital team of doctors, nurses and staff join her family in mourning her loss,” he said.Delhi police add murder to the charges framed against the six accused.
