So summer is here, and with it come school vacations and family trips. But with the ongoing heat wave, the prospect of a domestic holiday is a little unnerving. These simple tips will help you make the right choices in this scorching weather and still have a rollicking good time.
Sometimes I feel that Mumbai is famous for all the wrong reasons. There's much more to the city than Bollywood or Marine Drive or the overcrowded railway system and the seashore at Marine Drive. Here are five new reasons to visit Mumbai and none of them involve lurking outside Shah Rukh's home for a glimpse.

After six days there, I was convinced that Bangalore had a certain lazy sensuality to it, one that apparently extended to auto-walas. Using the mirrors on either side of the rickshaw, I glanced at him, imagining meeting him in a different context -- as a cousin's friend or a colleague at my internship in Hyderabad. A context that admittedly stripped him of his khaki uniform and punted him up several classes.
While you might consider your journey a success if no family members went missing between departure and arrival, children might disagree. The loss of a purple crayon or a green Lego block is the kind of things you won't be forgiven for.

Have we, as a society, come a pass where we need exclusive hotels and taxis for women to feel safe? Are we trying to say that because we cannot control harassment on the roads, let's safeguard women in these enclosures? Are we reiterating that women are not safe in general coaches, hotels and taxis driven by men?
Pakistan is suddenly every Indian's favourite travel destination, going by the number of politicians advising us to visit. Our friendly neighbouring country was highly recommended by Bharatiya Janta Party president Amit Shah, who seemed particularly impressed by the spectacular way in which Pakistanis celebrate Diwali. Since the Bihar Assembly election tsunami, it seems that our neighbours will be marking the festival of lights with even more fervour than usual!

Ladakh was always on my bucket list, for obvious reasons - the mighty Lower Himalayas, the pristine monasteries, the stark landscapes. However what touched me the most on this wondrous trip to Ladakh was its people. Simple yet shrouded in beautiful complexities, right from their faces to their lives, everything about these people is full of contrasts. I am sharing a few lives with you. Some real, and some fleshed out by my imagination.
The children race each other up the stone stairs to the mouth of the grotto. What kind of parent takes kids to see a charnel house? I push down vague doubts. After all, children are famously resilient. My firstborn is 14 and delights in all things gross, gory and scatological. Consorting with crania is just the kind of thing that would appeal to him. Besides there must be possibilities of wringing out a modicum of education from the display of femur, tibia, humerus and cranium...
