Is Carlotta Gall Right About Pakistan's Role In International Jihad?

The ISIS analogy, to me, is where Gall's narrative creeps into foggy, conspiratorial territory because she offers no motive. Surely Gall remembers from her own book that Pakistan's geostrategy orbits around its seven-decades-old rivalry with India. Managing this relationship to Pakistan's advantage is the sole purpose of "strategic depth." If the "deep state" has ever sponsored Islamist groups outside of US diktats, it has been to counter India in Afghanistan and Kashmir.

I'm Glad That Arundhati Roy Returned Her Award – She Never Deserved It

In her scathing criticism of the BJP-led government, "Why I Am Returning My Award", Arundhati Roy protests against the "lynching, "shooting, burning and mass murder of fellow human beings" that have occurred in the past year or so. The fact is that she is known for her prejudice against the present government, especially against the present Prime Minister.

Crucifying Scam Company Axact Won't Change Pakistan

All of Pakistan now wants a piece of the Axact pie. Following revelations that so-called IT company minted millions out of selling fake diplomas, Altaf Hussain, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader, demands that Axact CEO Shoaib Shaikh be tried for treason, while Pakistan's Interior Minister, Ch. Nisar Ali rues another ding to the country's "good image." Popular opinion suggests that Shaikh be made an example of, but the question is to what end? "Scruples" and "morals" are worthy ideals, but in the poor third-world, money always trumps philosophy.

The Shifting Sands Of The Middle East

There are currently four all-out wars in the Middle East in Syria, Iraq, Libya and Yemen with blowback of this in Tunisia, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Sudan amongst other places. The contexts of each of these situations is different and perhaps the one and only feature that states across the region share is that for various reasons most countries have denied their citizens the opportunity to form democratic civil society movements that participate in government and governance.
