Ultimately, despite all the ups and downs, a maid is always a woman's greatest love, dearer to her even than her husband. If I were to choose between the two, isn't it obvious who’d make the cut?

I am not questioning a woman's career choices here. Not everyone can take time off from her job to bring up her child - every family has a different financial obligation. Nor am I implying that employing an ayah is a cardinal sin. It's the parental avoidance in child-rearing that baffles me. If from bathing to feeding to napping all the harder tasks have been outsourced - what's left of parenting?
Z had a friend over this morning. They were riding their little bicycles each with a nurse close at hand to make sure that nothing untoward occurred. When she wanted my attention, Z yelled out "Madam". I cringed. I've been teaching her not to call me that that but it slips out here and there. "Don't worry, Madam," her friend's nurse said. "They all do it."
