On 12 March, a Supreme Court bench hearing a review petition commuted the death penalty of the convicts in the Dharmapuri bus burning incident to a life sentence. There are two fundamental things very wrong with this. For one, it was outside the court's jurisdiction to review the decision. Two, bringing in the grounds of "diminished responsibility" for mob violence will only bode ill for the country and for justice.
