Three regions spanning 10 cities have now launched Heat Action Plans, with Ahmedabad leading the way. The regions of Nagpur in Maharashtra and Bhubaneswar in Odisha also launched HAPs in March 2016 in advance of the hot season. The record-breaking temperatures we've seen so far are certainly testing the new plans.
Public health researchers, together with key experts, are collaborating with the Ahmedabad's traffic police department to strengthen the understanding of the health effects of extreme heat. The results of this first-of-its-kind analysis will strengthen interventions that help protect groups that are especially vulnerable to extreme heat, such as those who work outdoors.

In a recent trip to Kolkata in May, I captured some images on the streets of Kolkata during a pretty mean heatwave.
