I was hoping I would never have to write this. That no one would have to write this, ever. UNAIDS and civil society campaigners have had a special relationship of trust and collaboration. But now that relationship seems to have chipped. Irreparably, even. Two shockingly contradictory statements have emerged after the adoption of the2016 Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS by Member States of the UN at the recently concluded UN General Assembly Special Session last week.

The UN's Sustainable Development Goals, which will be rolled out in 2016 over the following 15 years worldwide -- at least on paper -- do include one health goal and a number of targets. I am often surprised by how few people realize that HIV/AIDS is the world's leading cause of death among women of reproductive age. This disease takes an enormous and unacceptable toll on the lives and potential of millions of women - and on the families, communities and economies they support.
