If you're a darker shade of brown, you were probably the recipient of derogatory comments almost as soon as your mommy popped you out. If you are lighter skinned, you would have heard paeans in praise of your "beauty".
The colour of your skin, which is getting a lot of attention these days in India, was a non-issue in the past. Even now, I don't think we really discriminate people on the basis of their skin colour. In fact, caste plays a more dominant role.
