While I am largely inflexible when it comes to my main meals (I only eat desi food), I am quite happy to experiment with snacks and treats in between. I even have a refrigerator by my bedside, and often wake up in the middle of the night and polish off a bag of chips. Or wine gums. Even yogurt.
Much to my delight much is happening in the world of food here in India. Every day I discover a new and innovative brand to add to my fridge or pantry. Here's a list of some of my recent favourites.
1. Epigamia Greek yogurt
After graduating from Wharton, Rohan Mirchandani bid adieu to his spiffy job to make ice creams here in India. Many of you are perhaps aware of his brand: Hokey Pokey. What promises to be equally cool is his brand of Greek yogurt called Epigamia. Rohan is a smart man. He has tweaked the flavours to suit the Indian palate. So there's Alphonso, Minty Chaat, Khatta Meetha. Look out for it at better stores in Mumbai.
2. Bonhomia teas and coffees
While Nespresso is rather lovely, the prices of its capsules are far from it. Capitalising on that, the guys at Bonhomia created Nespresso machine-compatible capsules. They do two varieties of tea and two types of coffee. Expect three more coffee flavours soon. Coffee is perfect for an evening pick-me-up, and the luscious teas please the senses. 3. Green Snack Co kale chips
The obsession with kale has come to India, and how. Look no further than Green Snack Co if you find yourself craving to try some kale chips. These are brilliant, with a perfect bite and no MSG or preservatives. They come in three flavours: Thai Sweet Chili, Cheese & Onion and Sea Salt & Vinegar (my personal favourite).
4. Lyall Farmstore gur-and-flaxseed bites
Gur is good for you. And when you mix flaxseeds with it what you get is both healthy and tasty. Lyall Farmstore's Flaxseed Gur is a winner. As are their Flaxseed Pinnis.
5. Goosebumps pickles
I adore pickles: I did as a child, and even more so as an adult. I even have them with fried eggs. Much is happening in the pickle pond in India but the fish that leaps out of the waters is Goosebumps. Their Chana Methi variant is quite wondrous. As is their Amba Halad. You can also customise your pickle with ingredients such as olives, green chillies and mustard, thus creating your very own version of the humble achaar.
