In a move just about everyone could have seen coming ― that is, everyone except FBI Director James Comey ― Donald Trump released a new campaign ad Wednesday highlighting the director’s announcement that the FBI is reviewing additional emails related to Hillary Clinton.
“How did Hillary end up filthy rich?” the ad’s narrator asks, before citing issues related to the Clinton Foundation. “Now the FBI has launched a new investigation. After decades of lies and scandal, her corruption is closing in.”
A statement released by the GOP nominee’s campaign called the ad “part of Mr. Trump’s closing argument to the American people” and said it would be airing in “major markets across the country.”
Comey’s decision to insert the bureau into the 2016 presidential campaign mere days before Nov. 8 set off a firestorm of criticism, from Democrats and Republicans alike. The move is especially perplexing given that Comey opposed signing on to a statement saying the Russian government was meddling in the U.S. election out of concern it would unduly affect the election.
Yet while the world waits on Comey and the FBI to sift through the thousands of new emails, a task described as so large it will likely not be completed by Election Day, Trump and his campaign has been busy lobbing attacks against Clinton ― using the investigation as a cudgel in the waning days of the campaign.
Jason Miller, Trump’s communications director, mocked Clinton for “spending the final week of an historic presidential election fighting the FBI instead of giving the American people something to vote for.”
“On November 8th expect the American people to choose Donald Trump’s America First policies and chart a new path for our country,” Miller said in a statement Wednesday.
