A South Korean man accused of murdering his girlfriend is claiming that she actually choked on a bite of octopus.

The man, identified only as Kim, was arrested in April, the AFP reports, almost two years after the death of his 24-year-old girlfriend, identified as Yoon.

The couple had visited a motel in April 2010, and during their stay, Kim called the front desk to report that Yoon had stopped breathing while eating Sannakji, a dish consisting of live octopus.

Sannakji is known as a choking hazard, since the still-moving suction cups can cause tentacle pieces to stick in a person's throat, according to MSN.

Yoon's body was cremated, but later that year, her father found out that a week before her death, she had taken out a life insurance policy and listed Kim as the beneficiary. Kim, it turns out, had received 200 million won (176,120 USD in 2010) as a result of his girlfriend's death.

Kim, now 31, was arrested after a lengthy investigation, and he went to trial last week, according Rocket News 24's English translation of an article by the Kopipe Intelligence Agency. Forensic staff testified that no traces of octopus were found in the woman's body.

However, because Yoon's body was cremated and an official autopsy was never conducted, the prosecution has little hard evidence against Kim.

The court is expected to announce its decision on October 11.
