Sanchita Ajjampur was born in Mumbai and moved to Europe at the age of three. She has lived most of her life in Europe and speaks fluent English, Italian, German and French, as well as colloquial Indian languages. She received her degree in arts from the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture Parisienne and her Fashion and Technology Master’s degree from Domus Academy in Milan. Sanchita has collaborated with Romeo Gigli, Studio Salvado/ Franco Moschino in Milan, with Tom Ford at Gucci in Florence, Alexander McQueen and Sarah Burton in London and continues to collaborate with Alber Elbaz at Lanvin, Missoni, Haider Ackermann, Etro, Chloé, Cavalli, Aspesi, Marni, Diesel and Dsquared2.
Sanchita recognized the potential and opportunities for a global fashion brand and she launched her entrepreneurial venture in 2000 in the city of Bangalore, co-founding one of the first fashion companies in India to adopt a modern infrastructure and a European business and ethics model. Sanfab Pvt. Ltd is the holding company of the sanchita fashion brand. The sanchita brand debuted in 2007 through the soft launch of the flagship store in Bangalore and Spring Summer 2009 was the debut catwalk collection. In 2010, she debuted with her sanchita menswear collection. Inspired by the "modern nomad", the collections include handcrafted pieces for the Rolling Stones founding member and lead guitarist, Keith Richards and international style icon and actor Frieda Pinto among others.
Sanchita has collaborated with Alessandro Mendini on industrial applied design projects for Alessi Homeware, Swatch Watches, Glas Design mirrors, and Slamp lamps. She was the design consultant for a range of "apparel projection clothing images" for Milan's La Scala Opera House together with Studio Lelli Masotti the official photographers at that time. She has exhibited her "applied art" embellished works with artist Arianna Caroli in Rome and Chicago and with the late John Drake Moore in Venice and Delhi. In 2007, she worked on ‘Sanchita for Villa Moda’ with Villa Moda Kuwait and Dubai. In collaboration with Sheikh Majed Al Sabah, Jeff Koons, and Damien Hirst she worked on the project “sanchita for I love souk” for the Al Sabha Art and Design Gallery. She has given an inspiring and creative talk on fashion and beauty in India at the ‘Trend Day’ for Limited Brands. In 2013 Sanchita collaborated with Jaguar Land Rover to design and present a collection inspired by the Jaguar F-Type for the multi-city launch of the sports car.
Just recently I attended the ongoing Kochi-Muziris Biennale - as a designer, I make it a point to visit such events for inspiration. It is important to have a finger on the pulse of what is happening in other forms of artistic and cultural expression, and not just fashion.
